A Scale Development Study: Motives and Consequences of Online Game Addiction

Abstract

Introduction: Our goal was to develop the Online Game Addiction Scale (OGAS) and to examine its properties. 

 

Methods: Three hundred and twenty-seven secondary school students (92% male and 8% female) participated in the study.  A draft scale including sixty-nine items were applied to the studies of the validity and the reliability. The exploratory factor analysis was used for the construct validity, and Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient, Spearman-Brown split half reliability and test-retest reliability were used for the reliability.     

 

Results: After the conducted exploratory analyses, a three factor structure composed of 21 items was obtained, explaining the 59 % of the variance. It has been observed that the factor loads of the items have ranged from .606 to .876.  In the reliability analyses, It has been observed that the Cronbach’s Alpha coefficients have been ranged from  .83 to .91,  the coefficients of the Spearman-Brown split half reliability have been ranged from .88 to .94, and the outcomes of the  Test-retest reliability have been ranged from .71 to .94.      

 

 

Conclusion:  According to results obtained from the analyses, it has been evaluated that OGAS is a valid and reliable tool which has adequate psychometric properties.
